On Friday, April 15, colleagues in the American Immigration Lawyers Association honored me with the AILA Chapter Pro Bono Champion award for 2016. Our chapter — Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico — is the belly of the beast. Frankly, given how many outstanding advocates devote their time & considerable expertise to assisting refugees and immigrants, and ESPECIALLY because these are among the people I call for help and answers, I’m both stunned and humbled by the recognition. Of course, I am also extremely grateful. Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch presented me with the award and a compliment I appreciate: I’m “a loud mouth” for justice for immigrants. Takes one to know one, Kate, and I’m so happy to be in this company!
